PIROGUE = 'LAKA'
Our vessel
Pirogues are traditional outrigger canoes carved from rare and precious wood, with a square sail that can measure up to eight meters in length and can be navigated by paddle or by sail. The pirogues are light but sturdy to enable the Vezo to fish on shallow reefs and travel in groups over long distances.

This rare and precious wood is the Farahafatse tree (Givotia madagascariensis). Centenarian trees that can reach up to an average of 30 meters in height and 120cm in diameter. They are rapidly depleting and are in danger of genetic erosion as a result of the overwhelming deforestation in Madagascar.

Our pirogue is a sustainable next-generation version. The core skeleton is made from the centenarian Farahafatse and coated in Fiber Glass, ensuring higher resistance, incombustibility & non-rotting, making it, essentially, a super-pirogue.
